"I grabbed a white bouquet of flowers from the local Publix and set out in search of Zora. For the next few hours I drove around Fort Pierce following the trail in silence paying my respects to dear Zora Neale Hurston. Fort Pierce reminds me of Rosa and Morrow, Louisiana in St. Landry Parish, where my father’s family is from. It’s rural. Replace St. Landry Parish’s bayous with the narrow sandbars and barrier islands that protect the shallow lagoons, rivers, and bays and there you have St. Lucie County."
